We've Survived Before

Drawing on knowledge about community resilience and empowerment from 2SLGBTQIA+ elders who survived the AIDS epidemic, 2SLGBTQIA+ youth are developing a COVID-19 mental health program for their younger peers.

Project Outcomes

In 2020, The New Brunswick Health Research Foundation and Mental Health Research Canada supported our application to create an intergenerational, participation action research project using zines and guided dialogue to explore community resilience and empowerment from 2SLGBTQIA+ elders who survived the AIDS epidemic,  2SLGBTQIA+ youth developed a COVID-19 mental health program for their younger peers. This mental health program and zine is available freely below for community groups to use!

Our Program

Belonging: An intergenerational program for queer, trans, and non-binary youth

In consultation with our youth participants, we created a mental health support program currently being piloted across New Brunswick high schools. We created these program pages that detail the inspiration, goals, and session activities for each week of the pilot program.

Building Community Through Crisis

We interviewed four queer elders in the Fredericton area about their experiences of living in New Brunswick as well as other parts of Canada during the AIDS epidemic. These are stories of resilience, survival, community, and kinship. Youth participants' reflections on these stories helped inform our mental health support program.
